Abracadabra! As a child you may have said these words to conjure up some fantastic magic. Maybe you wanted to make a wish come true, or to put a spell on someone, or some-thing. Did you know that aside from fairy tales and Walt Disney movies, these magic words have a history?
They come from an ancient language called Aramaic. The Aramaic alphabet was derived from the Phoenician alphabet around the 7th or 8th Century BC. It developed into a number of new languages, including Hebrew, Mongolian, Arabic, Old Turkish, and more. Classical Aramaic was the main language of the Persian, Babylonian and Assyrian empires and it spread as far as Greece and the Indus valley. Accordingly, Jews, including Jesus Christ spoke an Aramaic dialect.
In Aramic …”Abra Kedabra”… (Abracadabra) means:“I will create (a-bara) according to (ke) my word (dabara).”- Rabbi David Zeller
The first known mention of these words was in the third century AD in a book called Liber Medicinalis by Quintus Serenus Sammonicus. He was a physician to the Roman emperor Caracalla, who prescribed that malaria sufferers seeking healing, should wear an amulet containing the words Abracadabra written in the form of a triangle:
” Abracadabra! I will create according to my word.”

Acknowledging the power of words, there are many references about God speaking some-thing into existence. In Genesis it states: God said, “Let there be light, and there was light.” Our beloved Dr. Stone writes:
Life s a mystery. It is a spiritual essence of energy. The outflowing breath of the Infinite One, the Unknown Creator of all, is the centrifugal energy in Life in general. All was created by this process of HIS WORD of Spiritual Sound Essence, reverberating throughout endless space, ‘God spoke’. The Superior supports the inferior.-Dr. Randolph Stone’s Polarity Therapy, Volume one
Hindu’s have a word for the sound of the Universe being created: “OM.” Was it first a thought, a sound, or light taking form? Sound is a vibration in the continuum of light’s spectrum. If Source speaks things into existence, do you, being created in that image, have some aspect of this ability?
New Age spiritual books abound, and assert that you can think and grow rich, create good health, change your DNA, and more precisely use speech and thought for the creation of your own life.
When you ask for the manifestation prior to the vibration, you ask the impossible. When you are willing to offer the vibration before the manifestation…all things are possible. It is Law…. You have to begin to tell the story of your life as you now want it to be and discontinue the tales of how it has been or how it is.
– Ester and Jerry Hicks, The Law of Attraction
How you speak creates situations in your life. More precisely, how you feel and speak creates much of your circumstance. This free will is often underestimated.
What if you spoke only in highest truths? If your words came only after you honored silence; perhaps that would sound like prayer. Like the ancients, you could even dance, draw, or write your intentions into existence. You could use feeling to the maximum, reaching another level of intensity. It could become a prayer-body-self-expression experience. How you create becomes as important as how you speak. Even as you evolve in the practice of Polarity, you can watch as intention becomes feeling, thought, the spoken word, and then action. This reminds me of a another famous quote:
You are what your deepest desire is. As is your desire, so is your intention. As is your intention, so is your will. As is your will, so is your deed. As is your deed, so is your destiny.― Upanishads
After awhile it is the practice you wish to refine… as well as yourself. The process becomes the work. You honor the practice of speaking your desires, intentions, and destiny. You witness healing. Even you own. And, then perhaps…you see magic! Abracadabra! May it be so.
